There is also wild water a non-Olympic paddle sport. Whitewater slalom racing started in Europe in the 1940s by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) was shaped to administrate the sport. In 1949 the first World Championships were held in the Switzerland. The championships were held every odd-numbered year from 1949 to 1999 and since 2002 have been held annually in non-Summer Olympic years. From 1949 to 1963 Folding kayaks were used in the Canoe slalom and boats were made of fiberglass or nylon in the early 1960s. Boats were heavy frequently over 30 kilos. The widths of the boats were reduced by the International Canoe Federation and the boats were reduced in volume to pass the gates. Boats have become faster and much lighter. All World Championships were held in Europe from 1949 to 1977. In 1979 the first World Championship of the Canoe slalom held in North America was held at Jonquiere in Quebec, Canada.OlympicCanoe Slalom Tickets
